Frequently Asked Questions

1.    Who is SurvivorBox™? SurvivorBox™ is a 501c(3) non-profit dedicated to providing a cost-effective, easily-sourced and efficiently transported supply of first aid, personal care and immediate survival supplies to populations around the world in time of need due to disaster. As an organization, much of our labor is volunteer, which allows us to keep our costs low. We currently estimate the cost of a SurvivorBox™ package at $100 in low volume, with potentially significant price reductions possible based on economies of scale.
2.    What is a SurvivorBox? The SurvivorBox™ is designed around a modified “hurricane box”. It is a sturdy, lightweight and air-tight plastic box with a latching lid. The contents include a variety of first aid, survival and personal care items, items which are needed and used during disaster, but which may not be readily available due to disruptions in local transportation and commerce. Just as rapid emergency medical care is critical to sustaining life, quick access to these supplies can help lighten the shock and impact for survivors who may be injured or uprooted from their living situation. The box is light enough that it can be carried by children and people of small stature, and due to its airtight design, can protect the contents and even be used as a basic for bathing or as a flotation device.
3.    What is in a SurvivorBox? Each SurvivorBox™ will contain essential items including first aid supplies, razors, soaps, shampoos, toothpaste, feminine hygiene products, and other supplies needed for daily living. In addition, there would be items such as signal mirrors, flashlights and ponchos. Based on the situation, contents may be modified to address specific needs of the crisis. Our design is such that each box contains supplies adequate for a family of 4-6 people, and the supplies are such that they should be able to last for as long as 3 months with careful use. The items are generic in nature, and can be supplied by thousands of suppliers around the world.
4.    How is SurvivorBox funded? SurvivorBox™ relies heavily upon donations from individuals, corporations and foundations, and we actively seek to partner with NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations) operating locally or globally. We also rely on donations of supplies contained in the boxes, and provide acknowledgement of companies and organizations that partner with us.
5.    Who supports SurvivorBox? SurvivorBox™ is supported by a growing number of individual, corporate and foundation partners. For our work in the Republic of Haiti, we are allied with Partners in Health, a widely-known and well-established NGO that has been operating in Haiti for years prior to the recent disasters.
